Resources
The Institute for Cancer Research is focused on fight against Cancer with the most efficient strategies. To this end, efforts and resources are concentrated in a number of well-defined pathologies and selected clinical problems, which provide a competitive advantage to the Institute.

Human Resources:

The IRCC is known for its constant improvement and innovation, that is possible thanks to highly qualified employees and state-of-the-art technology.
Human Capital is an extremely important factor within the organization. The Institute offers the chance to students to obtain fellowship opportunities, not only for Italian but also for researches of all nationalities, as the Institute maintains international training agreements. Moreover, there is a wide range of job opportunities for postdoctoral and research assistant/associate positions, ensuring capable leadership for the oncology community of tomorrow.

To ensure and update the skills and potential of the existing workforce, it is common to use internal training and promotion programs to enhance employees’ professional development, to improve the effectiveness of the organization and the quality of the service it provides.

All these programs can be sorted according to an increasing complexity:

  1. Courses.
  2. Seminars and workshop.
  3. IRCC International Cancer Research Training program.
  4. Training period exchanges.
  5. PhD Programs.
  6. Master Degree in Molecular Oncology.

Financial Resources:

On the other hand, financial resources are required to carry out the research labour.  The Institute for Cancer Research is a private non-profit (ONLUS) and self-supporting organization; this basically means that it must make by itself enough revenue each year to cover its expenses, plus enough extra to support the work that will be done in the years ahead.

IRCC follows a “Grant Policy”, this implies a group of institutions and organizations which support and make possible IRCC’s activities. Usually, it consists of direct payments or financing investigative projects. The institute itself foresees regular equipment update, thanks to the Foundation financial support.

The institutions that have assisted the Institute’s mission include:

  • AIRC (Italian Association for Cancer Research): a private non-profit institution whose aim is to promote and support oncological research. AIRC’s function involves fund-raising and its distribution to sustain research activity and increase cancer awareness.

  • European Commission, which is the executive branch of the European Union independent from European countries governments. The body encourages European scientific progress through “Marie Curie Actions” and the Framework Programme for research and technological development. The FP is the European Union’s main instrument for funding research in Europe; these actions are aimed at the development and transfer of research competencies and the promotion of excellence in European research. Since their launch in 1984, the Framework Programmes have played a lead role in multidisciplinary research and cooperative activities in Europe and beyond.

  • EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization) promotes excellence in the molecular life sciences in Europe through targeted programmes and activities. The organization establishes strong co-operation with qualified and reliable partners which often result in lasting international collaborations.

  • Ministero della Salute: the Italian Ministry of Health uses a government-funded research policy, which consists of promotion and financing a scientific research in biomedical and sanitary fields aimed to improve the health state of the population. Organizations which award these programs are Universities, the National Research Council and other private or public research institutes, as well as public and private organizations.

  • Ministero dell'Università e della Ricerca (MIUR), this Ministry supports scientific research through two financing funds: FIRB (Fondo per gli Investimenti della Ricerca di Base) and PRIN (Programmi di ricerca di Rilevante Interesse Nazionale). FIRB is the most important instrument to finance Basic Research; on the other hand, PRIN foresees free and independent proposals.

  • Armenise-Harvard Foundation: its mission is to establish multidisciplinary, basic science research that will support leading scientists at Harvard Medical School and at foremost institutions in Italy, in the pursuit of knowledge and scientific discovery for the benefit of humankind, in the fields of medicine and agriculture.

  • Regione Piemonte: a regional structure to encourage innovation and research in Piemonte has been created thanks to a specific law. It is intended to stimulate technological innovation supply and demand, as well as an increase in Piemonte’s attractiveness and competitiveness.

  • AICR (Association for International Cancer Research): AICR is an English independent charity whose aim is to support fundamental research by eminent and promising scientists throughout the world, into the causes and prevention of cancer. It supports fundamental research into the causes, mechanisms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer.

  • Bank foundations (Fondazione CRT and Compagnia di San Paolo): these foundations are not banks neither public bodies, but active members of civil society. They are non profit organizations which, although private, pursue aims of public interest and social use, in order to foster the civil, cultural and economic development of the community in which they operate
    .
  • Other private donations: people or other private organizations who want to contribute to IRCC scientific labour can do it through donations, events or wills.
